MEMORABLE FIRST YEAR IN LOUISIANA FOR JOCKEY LUIS VIVANCO

It is not uncommon for a Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse jockey to shift his tack to a new circuit in an effort to build business. With some, the move does not pan out and they return to their previous beat. For others, it's a more positive outcome with slow, but steady growth.

Few riders have had the remarkable success of Luis Vivanco, who made the move to Louisiana earlier this year. Not only has he done well at each of the state's four racetracks, he is currently the leading Quarter Horse jockey in the country in wins!

Excellent First Year in Louisiana

Vivanco, 36, was born in Veracruz, Mexico and began riding in the United States in 2007. With over 4,100 mounts in Texas, he emerged as one of the top riders in the state, winning titles at Sam Houston, Retama, Lone Star and Gillespie. Vivanco began contemplating shifting his base to Louisiana last year. He conferred with veteran rider Gilbert Ortiz and asked if his agent, Cynthia Menard, would take his book.

Trainer Bobby Touchet has known Vivanco for over a decade and respects him not only as a skilled jockey, but a dedicated family man.

"I have been begging him for a long time to ride in Louisiana," said Touchet. "Maybe it took him a while to finally make the decision as he was so well-known in Texas. But he had no reason to fear starting all over again; he showed everyone here what an awesome rider he is."

So with the support of many horsemen he had ridden for previously and the established Louisiana connections of Menard, Vivanco headed east and began 2018 at Harrah's Louisiana Downs in Shreveport. He finished the live season ranked fifth in money earned with 12 wins and a respectable 48% in the money statistic.

Vivanco rode several horses for trainer Miguel Rodriguez at Louisiana Downs, running second in the $294,942 Mardi Gras Futurity (RG2) aboard TDZ Louisiana Toast.

"He's very dedicated and down to earth," stated Rodriguez. "Luis is willing to do whatever is asked. It's no surprise to me that he is having the success in Louisiana. He's very hard working; a family man and nice person."

Vivanco faced an ultra-competitive jockey colony at Delta Downs with hopes of finishing in the top ten in the standings. He surpassed that goal significantly, challenging perennial leader John Hamilton to the wire, finishing the 46-day meet with a record of 40 wins from 216 starters, just four behind Hamilton.

"It's working out well," said Menard, who also handles business for Noe Castaneda. "Luis is a great rider and very professional. I am lucky in that my riders get along and support each other."

Next came Fair Grounds, and Vivanco won 11 races in the ten-day season, again, finishing one win behind Hamilton. He qualified Zoom By Me for the $434,538 LQHBA Breeders Futurity (G1) for trainer Jose Sanchez, III.

However, Vivanco has taken his business to the highest level this meet at Evangeline Downs, where he stands second in the standings to Hamilton. Friday, November 16 was undoubtedly one of the best of his career, when he won four trials for the LQHBA Louisiana Million.

His most resounding victory of the night came aboard Larry Boudreaux's Mpshinning in the third of 14 trials that evening, covering 400-yards in :19.646 seconds. The son of All American Futurity winner Mr Piloto, who is trained by Josue Huitron, overcame a bad break, but powered to the wire impressively.

Mpshinning drew praise from racing fans and horsemen, and veteran jockey Gilbert Ortiz commended Vivanco for his skilled ride aboard the bay colt.

"The horse next to him was fractious in the gate and was scratched," said Ortiz. "When the gates broke, Mpshinning went up in the air and Luis' foot got loose. Despite a poor break, Luis got him running and knew he was on a really good one!"

How good is Mpshinning? Vivanco has ridden several graded stakes winners in his career including TQHA Sale Futurity champions Cash Flow Cartel and Won to Watch. He was the first jockey to ride Kiss My Hocks and piloted the brilliant son of Tempting Dash to victory in the 2014 Sam Houston Futurity. The Texas-bred went on to win the Rainbow Futurity at Ruidoso Downs and was named 2014 AQHA champion 2-year-old colt.

"I feel that this colt is as good as Kiss My Hocks," stated Vivanco, who qualified two other finalists to the LQHBA Louisiana Million, will ride Mp Shinning in the December 15 final.

Family Man

Vivanco and his wife, Elizabeth, have two children, Lorena, 6, and four-year-old Jesus. Home is in San Antonio, which requires a lot of time on the road as he commutes back and forth to Louisiana. His love for his wife and children provide the incentive on those long hours behind the wheel.

"I love my family and want to provide for them," said Vivanco. "Thinking about them is the motivation I need while I am riding in Louisiana."

December Will be a Month to Remember

In the next few weeks, Vivanco will have some tremendous opportunities ahead at Evangeline Downs. In addition to riding the fastest qualifier in the LQHBA Louisiana Million, he has live mounts in the $311,470 EVD Futurity and $40,000 LQHBA Juvenile, which will also be run on Saturday, December 15.

Vivanco is currently the leading jockey in the country by wins and will likely be one of the candidates for 2018 AQHA champion jockey. That honor is usually bestowed on a jockey with a win in one or more Grade 1 stakes, so Vivanco, like past Louisiana nominees John Hamilton and David Alvarez, is not holding his breath for national recognition.

However, regardless of the outcome of the major stakes yet to come this month at Evangeline Downs or whether he might top John Hamilton for leading rider, Vivanco is satisfied.

"John has been tough through his career and all this year and I have so much respect for him," acknowledged Vivanco. "I never thought at the beginning of the year that I would find this kind of success here in Louisiana. It's been a dream come true and I am very grateful."

Después, en Fair Grounds Vivanco ganó 11 carreras en la temporada de diez-días, otra vez, terminando detrás de Hamilton, pero por un triunfo solamente. Calificó a Zoom By Me para el LQHBA Breeders Futurity (G1) de $434,538 del entrenador José Sánchez, III.

No obstante, Vivanco ha llevado su carrera al más alto nivel en la actual temporada de Evangeline Downs, donde está segundo en la tabla de posiciones detrás de Hamilton. El viernes 16 de noviembre fue indudablemente uno de sus mejores días en las pistas, al ganar cuatro eliminatorias para la carrera LQHBA Louisiana Million.

Su más resonante victoria de la noche estuvo a bordo de Mpshinning de Larry Boudreaux en la tercera de 14 eliminatorias en la cartelera, cubriendo 400-yardas en :19.646 segundos. El hijo del ganador del All American Futurity, Mr Piloto, quien es entrenado por Josué Huitron, superó una mala salida y se encaminó poderosamente hacia la meta.

Mpshinning fue elogiado por fanáticos de las carreras y caballistas y el veterano jinete Gilbert Ortiz felicitó a Vivanco por su habilidosa monta a bordo del potro bayo.

Su amor por su esposa y sus hijos lo incentivan en esas largas horas detrás del volante.

“Amo a mi familia y quiero traer el pan a la casa”, dijo Vivanco. “El pensar en ellos es la motivación que necesito cuando estoy montando en Louisiana”.

Deciembre será un mes para recorder

En las próximas semanas, Vivanco tendrá varias oportunidades grandes ante sí en Evangeline Downs. Además de montar al más rápido de las eliminatorias en la LQHBA Louisiana Million, va a pilotear en el EVD Futurity de $311,470 y el LQHBA Juvenile de $40,000, que también se correrán el sábado 15 de diciembre.

Vivanco es el actual jinete líder en el país por triunfos y es posible que sea uno de los candidatos al jinete campeón de la AQHA 2018. Dicho honor se le otorga usualmente a un jinete con uno o más triunfos en carrras de Grado 1, así que, Vivanco al igual que otros nominados como John Hamilton y David Alvarez, no está conteniendo la respiración por el reconocimiento nacional.

E independientemente del resultado de las grandes carreras de este mes en Evageline Downs o de que logre superar a John Hamilton en el liderato de monta, Vivanco está satisfecho.

“John ha sido duro durante toda su carrera y en todo este año, yo le tengo mucho respeto”, reconoció Vivanco. “Nunca pensé, a principios de año, que tendría este tipo de éxito aquí en Louisiana. Ha sido un sueño hecho realidad y estoy muy agradecido”.
